Discovering Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharatangalle
For those of you interested in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist temples, the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple in Mulkirigala , 16km northwest of Tangalle and 25 minutes’ drive. It has been constructed on a 205 m high natural rock, enclosed with another four rocks known as Benagala, Kondagala, Bisogala and Seelawathiegala. As the temple has been built on a gigantic natural rock similar to Sigiriya , the site is known as Punchi Seegiriya (Little Sigiriya) by the locals. Vast collections of paintings and sculptures belonging to the Kandyan Era can be observed in the caves and image houses in the Vihara premises. Most of the murals depict the stages from the life of the Lord Buddha and Jathaka stories
